FAQs
Plain answers.
Where does the Ocean Discovery Center stand? Is it opening?
It is in the planning phase: its founder intends to build it, and nothing is built yet. No authority, host, venue or owner has agreed to it yet. There is no funding, no organization, no building and no opening date yet.
It is not an Aethon facility, not a City of Bethlehem project and not an ArtsQuest partnership. Aethon is its data and mapping partner: Aethon supplies the maps and data; the center does public education. Aethon does not fund, own, operate or approve the center.
The same person founded Aethon and is planning this center. That is a conflict of interest. A future board would manage it with a conflict-of-interest policy, an independent board majority and arm's-length written agreements. No other partner exists, and no other organization has been contacted.
Is “Ocean Discovery Center” its real name?
It is a working name. Other places already use similar names, including NOAA's Gray's Reef Ocean Discovery Center in Savannah, Georgia.Source: NOAA (Gray's Reef Ocean Discovery Center, undated), Gray's Reef Ocean Discovery Center (undated) No trademark search has been done yet.
Can I buy tickets, become a member or donate?
Not now, and not on this site. Nothing is being sold. No money is being raised now. If that changes, small program grants would come first, through a fiscal sponsor or a nonprofit with proper oversight. Any fundraising for a building would wait until governance, a site and permits are in place.
Where would it be?
The planned location is South Bethlehem: the SteelStacks campus and the East 3rd Street corridor, around LANta's Southside Station. Phase 0 programs are planned in existing venues in South Bethlehem, if they agree. The temporary exhibit (Format A) is planned in an existing venue in South Bethlehem, if one agrees. The center (Format B) is planned in an existing building on the East 3rd Street corridor, if an owner agrees.
No building has been chosen, and no owner or venue has been contacted. No land or building has been offered or confirmed with an owner.
The research also looked at Lehigh's Mountaintop campus and Easton, now seen as areas for possible collaborators, and at downtown Allentown and other places, which were not carried forward. Not an official project of, or endorsed by, Lehigh University.
Will there be live animals or an aquarium?
The center is planned to work without live animals. An aquarium would be studied separately, and would go ahead only if strict welfare, staffing, regulatory and financial conditions were all met. Otherwise the answer is no.
Deep-sea animals and rare wild animals would never be captured for display, and marine mammals are excluded.
State rules also limit local animals. Pennsylvania lists all live crayfish, native or not, as prohibited: possessing, importing, transporting, introducing, buying or selling them is unlawful, with narrow exceptions (for example bait used where it was caught, or scientific use with escape controls and documentation). Anything else needs the Fish and Boat Commission's prior written approval.Source: Pa. Code 1 (58 Pa. Code § 71a.11. Prohibited species, effective 1 January 2024), 58 Pa. Code § 71a.11. Why an ocean center in Bethlehem, so far from the sea?
Rain that falls on Bethlehem drains to the Lehigh River, which joins the Delaware at Easton and reaches the Atlantic through Delaware Bay. About 14.2 million people rely on water from the Delaware River Basin.Source: DRBC (Delaware River Basin population update, 8 February 2023), Delaware River Basin population update (8 February 2023) The ocean is closer to daily life here than it looks.
And most of the deep seafloor has never been seen, so exploration is a story for everyone, wherever they live.
What is Aethon's role?
Aethon is the center's data and mapping partner, agreed on 19 October 2026. Partner: Aethon, the ocean data, mapping and exploration company founded by the plan's author. Aethon supplies the maps and data; the center does public education.
Aethon does not fund, own, operate or approve the center, and the center is not an Aethon facility. It is in the planning phase, with nothing built yet. On this site, Aethon's material appears only as links, with credit, such as Aethon's live seafloor map viewer (by Aethon Intelligence). Nothing of Aethon's is copied or embedded.
The same person founded Aethon and is planning this center. That is a conflict of interest. A future board would manage it with a conflict-of-interest policy, an independent board majority and arm's-length written agreements.
Would the center run boats or field missions?
No. The center is for public education: exhibitions, classes, robotics demonstrations (in a freshwater test tank, once there is a center), and outreach. Research, engineering and any work at sea would happen elsewhere. Local outdoor activities, such as stream checks, would stay with the watershed groups that already run them.
Any marine work would use existing ports, vessel operators and marine research facilities rather than new ones.
The plan links the center to two existing larger seaports, the Port of Philadelphia and the Port of Newark/Elizabeth, for vessel and underwater-robot field work, field trips and data. These links are planned (decided on 19 October 2026 by the person planning the center). No port or terminal operator has agreed or been contacted, and their rules would apply.
The Lehigh Valley already has freight links to Atlantic seaports. The Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC) describes easy access to the ports of Newark and Philadelphia, and a rail freight terminal in Bethlehem where containers move between trains and trucks.Source: LVEDC (Lehigh Valley's transportation network offers convenient market access for businesses, undated), Lehigh Valley's transportation network offers convenient market access for businesses (undated) Any future Aethon coastal base would be Aethon's decision, made only if real operating demand justified it, and it would not need to be a commercial seaport.
What are Bethlehem Commons and Bethlehem Connect?
They are separate proposed projects for community space and future transit connections, not existing ones. We found no other projects with those exact names. The closest match, the City of Bethlehem's 2016 trail plan “BethConnects: A Trail Study,” is unrelated to this center.Source: City (BethConnects: A Trail Study, 2016), BethConnects: A Trail Study (2016) They appear here only to show how ideas could fit together one day.
Would it be free?
The goal is free or low-cost access: sponsored school visits, library museum passes, free community days, and reduced prices like Museums for All. Under Museums for All, participating museums charge people showing an EBT card from nothing to $5 each, for up to four people per card.Source: Museums for All 1 (About Museums for All, 2026), About Museums for All (2026)Source: Museums for All 2 (Museum FAQs, undated), Museum FAQs (undated) How much can be free depends on funding, which a feasibility study would test. None of this has been arranged yet.
Would the building run on renewable energy?
It would be designed to use as little energy as practical, and to add only natural energy sources, such as solar where the roof allows and heat pumps, with battery or thermal storage. The grid would be the backup, under the utility's and the state's rules. Whether ground-source heat pumps are possible depends on the site's geology and any environmental covenants. We do not claim it would be energy-independent.
How do you make sure the science is right?
Sources are listed on the Research page, with primary sources marked. Every figure links to its source, and the Research page lists each source's date (or says it is undated). Facts about places are tagged Verified, Reported, Proposed or Unknown, and planning sizes and our own estimates are labeled as ours.
We say whether a depth was measured, predicted, filled in by computer or actually seen. We never invent observations, species records, footage or discoveries.
